years ago Steve was offered a job
as a
forester in
Washington county. I had no idea where Woodland is at the time
but I knew I hated my office job and our second floor city
apartment. I urged, encouraged and sometimes nagged Steve to take
the job. I didn't care where we were going as long as we were
leaving. We bought a house on a 2/3 acre lot in town. Ten
years, two horses and six chickens later we outgrew the small lot.
Boarding the horses wasn't working and neither was keeping them on our
time lot. It was time to
move again. We bought 45 acres of land. Three acres were
overgrown field (farmed many years ago) and the rest is forested. Some
of the forest was harshly harvested the winter before we
moved in. The only building was the house. There was a lot
of work to do to turn this place into a working farm. I traded
heels and suits for jeans and boots and have never been happier.
Today, Robin is the full time farmer. She has attended classes and workshops on greenhouse management, cold weather growing and business in order to keep the farm running smoothly. Steve is still working in the job that brought us here. He pitches in during the evening and on weekends. Taylor works on the farm in the summer and is starting high school this fall. Kristin moved off the farm when she went to college. She now lives about 90 minutes away. |
